Remarkable documentary photography work by Laughlin He captured the last images of many of these grand old homes before they were destroyed within the period he shot this book late 1930s to late 1940s For example Woodlawn Plantation was nearly completely destroyed in the five years between his first and second photo sessions there Other homes were claimed by the Mississippi River in the years since while others have been lucky enough to be saved and restored It s heartbreaking how many of these uniue houses were torn down by time and nature vandals or contractors making Laughlin s photos some the best or only images we have of these historical treasures It wasn t until well into the 20th century that preservation and restoration was able to be undertaken in earnest for someMy feelings toward the plantation homes of Louisiana and Mississippi have always been mixed Appreciation for their form and beauty with all too much awareness of the slave labor that was involved in building funding and maintaining them a point too often glossed over by the historical home tours of today Some may find Laughlin s highly poetic even purple prose added to his purely historical descriptions over the top but I thought it helped address the moral discrepancy about the possibility of beauty in the midst of involuntary servitude The houses don t know who built them or how and the plantations surrounding them are long gone as is the culture that made the wealth and the misery of the time possible These few ghostly ladies are all that is left of a peculiar time in this regional history still standing alone amidst the river swamps and mossy trees It s important to maintain them and give ourselves permission to admire them with the awareness of the full picture both beautiful and miserable of the society that brought them into existence They should be used for that purpose and less for the interior decoration tours that they re typically presented as today
