Dear Dull Diary Review of the Nordisk Books paperback 2020 translated from the Swedish original Inlandet 2018 Inlands reads like a selection of diary entries although they are not necessarily all in chronological order There is a general time forward plot telling the story of moving to an isolated Northern Swedish town The young woman has made the move to be close to her boyfriend The relationship has ended by the time she arrives but she stays anyway The bulk of it is her day to day experiences in the town getting a job going out Saturday nights watching taped TV mystery series presumably the use of VHS tape is to signify that this all takes place in the 1980s perhaps Hardly anything dramatic happens except for the beginnings of a possible other relationship which is cut shortDon t be deceived by the 240 supposed page length With the amount of blank space in this English language edition there are maybe only 140 pages of actual text material here This seems to be an even further expansion of the spacing of the 204 pages of the original Swedish edition Sometimes spacing can be used to allow the reader to ponder the significance of what they ve just read No such inspiration seems to be at work here I read Inlands as part of the Borderless Book Club which has been organized by Peirene Press and 7 other UK independent publishers for a 16 week period May 14 to August 20 2020 during this current world pandemic situation It is the successor to the earlier Translated Fiction Online Book Club which was organized for 6 weeksThere is an Autumn 2020 session planned for the Borderless Book Club from September 3 to December 10 2020 and the planned book selection can be viewed here

sparse language no daylight followed by days without darkness this was a compelling slightly bleak story about a woman who moves to a small town in the north of Sweden to live with her boyfriend but they have broken up by the time she gets there interestingly told playing with time and structure a little am not sure this will stick with me

Inlands by erin willowsI was drawn to read this from the cover alone A work of art a painting you can almost imagine yourself in It’s by artist Karin Andersson and is called ‘Homeland’ and that is so apt for the themes and story withinIt’s a lyrical story written in ethereal prose A young woman moves fr

Inlands takes a lot of risks It is a book willing to sacrifice narrative for atmosphere as a sort of projection of character Unfortunately either because I am not sensitive enough to catch significant subtleties being highlighted in the minutia or because the novel doesn't go deeply enough to pull off it's artistic project the whole thing fell like a house of cards for me Stasis is a uestionable project to begin with and though

If you don't mind spending a few hours in an abyss of apathetic torpor there is appeal to this story of forlornness

This was a uiet reflective and a tad melancholic book A story where not much happens but that's where the beauty lies I really enjoyed the way it was written it felt like thoughts or journal entries The writing was beautiful and made you really feel immersed in the setting and the main character's life I highly recommend this to those who

This book is a slight meditation on boredom loneliness and isolation that emulates what it ponders It evokes the chilly north and the feeling of treading water or running in place The structure was elusive to me but at a ce
